This Wednesday, the United States imposed sanctions on two shipowners and designated two vessels as “blocked property” as it seeks to target sources of income for Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who have stepped up their attacks on commercial shipping off the coast of Yemen.
“The United States is today sanctioning two shipowners and identifying two vessels as blocked property for their role in transporting goods on behalf of Saeed al-Jamal, an Iranian financial group that assists the Houthis and is supported by the Force. Qods Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,” the US State Department said in a statement.
According to Washington diplomacy, revenue generated through al-Jamal’s network “supports the efforts of Houthi militants, including ongoing attacks on international maritime trade in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.”
