Lisbon’s Public Ministry (MP) said on its website that by the end of February it had opened 32 criminal cases in relation to protests led by climate activists, in which 15 people had been convicted.
Thus, the deputy summarizes, by a verdict dated October 20, 2023, three defendants were charged with committing a crime related to an attack on the safety of road transport, to one year in prison. It was replaced by a fine of 120 days.
In the second case, the verdict was handed down on October 23, 2023, three defendants were convicted of the same crime, while a similar sentence of 1 year’s imprisonment was commuted to a 140-day fine.
On January 4 this year, six defendants were sentenced for disobedience to a 25-day fine, commuted to warnings. The deputy claims to have appealed this decision.
Finally, on January 11, 2024, the three defendants were sentenced for violating road safety to one year in prison, commuted to a day’s fine. The same defendants were also convicted of disobedience and qualified disobedience. From a legal point of view, they received a one-time penalty of a fine of 120 days.
A summary trial for the same type of crime has been scheduled for March.
The prosecutor’s office also states that other summary proceedings could not be carried out, and the cases were sent for investigation.
Nineteen cases are still under investigation, with seven charges already filed for the same type of offence.
