This Thursday, the PS general secretary asked members to encourage those who are still undecided to vote on Sunday, and to encourage those who voted for the party in 2022 to do so again, arguing that this represents a “good change” and AD – “good change.” change is bad.”
At the end of Porto’s traditional Rua de Santa Catarina, Pedro Nuno Santos stood on a platform where he gave a short mobilization speech to hundreds of people who followed his walk between Praça da Boavista Square and the intersection with the Bolhão market. . .
“Let’s reach out to those who voted for the PS in 2022, let’s reach out to all Portuguese, to those who are not on television, on social media or in the polls: to the people who work, who have worked all their lives, to the women of Portugal , so that we can win on the 10th,” he said.
The PS general secretary pledged to “continue to govern for the sake of the people, for the sake of all the Portuguese people,” stressing that the party wants to “continue to move forward” and does not want to take “a single step back.”
“Let’s go to work, let’s take our neighbors, our friends, let each of you convince those who have not yet decided to improve their salaries, our pensions, our social network. (…) Good changes depend on us, bad changes depend on us.” before them. Forward with us: forward, Portugal,” he said.
During this journey, in which he was surrounded by a strong security system that did not allow him to come into close contact with the population, Pedro Nuno Santos was accompanied by the Olympic athlete Rosa Mota, the head of the PS Porto list, Francisco Assis, and the number three on this list, the Minister of Health Manuel Pizarro.
At the very beginning of the journey, the PS leader encountered a war veteran who was in Angola and asked him not to forget the former combatants, to which Pedro Nuno Santos responded with a family member.
“My father is a war veteran, he was in Guinea-Bissau,” said Pedro Nuno Santos.
Later, when I spoke to reporters, one gentleman called him incompetent, and another tried to “pierce” the security bubble with a poster alluding to victims of BES, but failed to do so.
Despite these setbacks, the rally took place in a celebratory tone: the vast majority of people Pedro Nuno Santos met promised to vote for PS this Sunday, asking for photographs, giving gifts or waving from balconies and windows. In most of these contacts, the Socialist leader always left the same message.
“Let’s work to win. Force your neighbors, force those who have not yet decided to vote,” he said.
Halfway through, it began to rain heavily and Pedro Nuno Santos took the opportunity to highlight the mobilization that the socialist campaign is causing, despite the fact that there were fewer people on this street, compared to António Costa’s in 2022.
“Look, even despite this rain, the strength of our campaign,” he emphasized.
Rosa Mota’s presence ended with an awkward moment at the end of the street, after the Olympic athlete left the “bubble” where Pedro Nuno Santos was and was swallowed up by the crowd.
“Where are you, Rosa Mota?” Pedro Nuno Santos asked from the top of the stage, with the Olympic athlete quickly ascending to the makeshift stage and standing next to the Socialist leader to hear her closing speech.
Immediately after Pedro Nuno Santos got into his car to leave Santa Catarina Street, the Democratic Alliance delegation took exactly the same route that the PS had taken.
More than 10.8 million Portuguese are called to vote on Sunday to elect 230 members of the Assembly of the Republic.
18 political forces, 15 parties and three coalitions are participating in the elections.
