The National Electoral Commission confirmed it had received several complaints about statements made by former Prime Minister José Sócrates this morning following the March 10 legislative vote.
“The committee has received several reports regarding statements made by former Prime Minister José Socrates. These reports are the result of viewing and reading various reports covering his trip to the polls,” the organization said.
The former head of government expressed in statements to CNN, your intention to vote for the Socialist Party. “I voted for the party I was associated with,” he said, before revealing that he had never voted “so decisively.”
“The statements made relate to the candidate competing in the elections and thoughts on this matter. As such, such statements may interfere with the process of shaping the will of voters and thus fall within the scope of the ban on campaigning on election day,” CNE adds in a statement to which morning Post had access.
“Taking into account the above, the Commission decides to forward the case materials to the prosecutor’s office, since there is evidence of the crime of propaganda on election day and at the polling station, and to oblige the media to stop disseminating such materials and statements.”
