The armed man who held 17 people hostage on a passenger bus in Rodoviaria Novo Rio, in the center of the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, on Tuesday surrendered to police shortly before 18:00 local time (9:00 Lisbon time).
The kidnapping began around 3 p.m. and the perpetrator shot at least two people, one of them, a 34-year-old man, very seriously.
According to Military Police Colonel Marcos Andrade, the kidnapper even shot at the police when the bus was surrounded, but later agreed to surrender, seeing that he had no way to escape. According to the colonel, all 17 hostages who were still in the hands of the criminal left the bus in a state of despair, but safe and sound.
When the officer announced the end of the kidnapping, it was not yet clear who the perpetrator was, but unofficial information suggested that he was a criminal from the Rocinha favela who had already served his sentence. He tried to escape to the state of Minas Gerais, where the bus was heading, and at that time there was no information about why the man shot two more people and got on the bus.
