Denmark will introduce compulsory recruitment of women into military service, the Danish government announced this Wednesday, citing the need to strengthen the Armed Forces and address national defense issues.
“More active recruitment, including full gender equality, should help solve the problems of defence, national mobilization and personnel of our armed forces,” Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said at a press conference cited by Politico.
Denmark becomes the third country in Europe to introduce compulsory female conscription, after Norway (in 2015) and Sweden (in 2017), changing the current system in which women could only volunteer for military service.
