The European Union (EU) will create a mechanism for reporting violations of international humanitarian law, for example by Israel in the Gaza Strip or Russia in Ukraine, said European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic.
“The problem that we increasingly face is the lack of respect for international humanitarian law, the well-known laws of war, because even war has rules and you cannot do whatever you want. […] The rules are very clear, but most of them are broken,” says Janez Lenarcic.
“We see the number of civilian casualties in conflicts such as Gaza, Ukraine and Sudan, which shows that there is a generalization, disrespect or non-compliance with this fundamental rule of international humanitarian law – the protection of civilians,” the official added in an interview with Lusa and to other European media in Brussels.
