Polish farmers again blocked two border posts between Poland and Germany this Monday, after weeks of protests on the border with Ukraine, to prevent trucks carrying goods from entering the country.
Polish police said farmers had positioned themselves at the Świecko and Gubinek checkpoints on the Polish side of the border with Germany to prevent trucks from passing through.
The blockade, which began on Sunday, will continue until Wednesday, a police spokesman said.
The protests are calling for the reversal of a measure introduced by the European Commission to exempt food import tariffs from Ukraine, a country that has been the target of a Russian military offensive since February 2022.
According to police, traffic was completely blocked at the Swiecko and Gubinek checkpoints, where protesters continue to express their dissatisfaction with the re-export of German agricultural products from Ukraine.
Currently, only ambulances and medical teams are allowed to pass through the checkpoints.
Since the beginning of February, farmers have been protesting in Poland, demonstrating dissatisfaction with the actions of the authorities and the so-called “European Green Deal”.
The main demands of the protesters are the suspension of imports of Ukrainian agricultural products and the withdrawal of environmental plans introduced by the European Union (EU) to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050.
The Polish government has begun negotiations with farmers, but a solution to the problem of cross-border traffic has not yet been found.
Although Poland is a strong ally of Ukraine, these blockades have damaged relations between the two neighboring countries.
