Presidential Minister Mariana Vieira da Silva said this Thursday that Portugal “should not give up” the “level of autonomy and freedom” in public policy decisions achieved along the trajectory of “correct accounts”.
The minister was speaking to reporters at a press conference following a meeting of the Council of Ministers in Lisbon when she was asked about the need to amend the budget to implement some of the measures already announced by the PSD and CDS-PP.
Regarding the need for an adjustment budget, Mariana Vieira da Silva declined to comment, saying that it was not her place to comment on the matter, and emphasizing that this is an answer that is “impossible to give” since “it depends on the design, the phasing, the scale of the measures, which must be accepted.”
However, Vieira da Silva believed that “the country has reached such a level of autonomy and freedom in decision-making in the field of public policy, with the right calculations, that it should not give up.”
According to a government official, this framework allows for “many aspects of policy, both in support of those working in public administration and in support of those who need it most, as well as other humanitarian assistance decisions.” given how An example is the 10 million euros approved today by the Council of Ministers to increase Portugal’s support for the UN agency that supports Palestinian refugees.
“From our point of view, this is the path along which the country must determine its future public policy, which will give it more freedom and better conditions for modernization and improving the quality of life of its citizens. In addition, there is a new government and a designated prime minister. The minister who is responsible for policy making and decision-making, which always exists when you are in government,” he stressed.
The Democratic Alliance (AD) won the elections on March 10, and the leader of the SDP was appointed prime minister by the president of the republic. Luis Montenegro will present his government on March 28, with the inauguration scheduled for April 2.
