The abolition of the regional health departments (RHA) was approved this Thursday by the Council of Ministers, marking the “final stage of the reorganization reform” of the Ministry of Health, which consolidated local health institutions.
The completion of the five ARSs began on January 1, 2024, and the diploma establishing their disappearance was approved this Thursday at the penultimate meeting of the Council of Ministers of the outgoing government.
Presidential Minister Mariana Vieira da Silva explained that the decree-law abolishing the ARS is “the final stage of the reform to reorganize the Ministry of Health, which included the creation of the Executive Directorate.”
This new model, which comes into force from the beginning of the year, “guarantees the coherence and efficiency of the system through a stronger and more efficient organizational model and more skills in managing the provision of health care to citizens,” said Mariana Vieira da. Silvia.
With the collapse of the ARS, its operational functions were transferred to local health departments.
