The Republican National Guard (GNR) has been searching the Paços de Ferreira city council since 7am this Friday. According to CMThe source of the operation will be environmental crimes, in particular a possible crime related to the pollution of the Ferreira River.
The situation will be related to the Arreigada wastewater treatment plant, which has already been requalified and still does not solve the problem of pollution of the Ferreira River.
Several environmental movements and opposition parties in Pacos de Ferreira have been warning for several years, especially when the water plant was built, that the investments that would be made would not be enough to maintain and solve the pollution problems.
Currently, “computer searches and investigations are being conducted to seize physical documents, computer data and documents and other evidence,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
There are currently 11 domestic search warrants and nine international search warrants being issued. Investigations are carried out in government institutions in different parts of the country: Porto, Braga, Coimbra, Guarda, Leiria and Lisbon.
According to the statement, the investigation involves about 100 PPR soldiers and 19 inspectors from the General Inspectorate of Agriculture, Marine, Environment and Spatial Planning, as well as the prosecutor’s office responsible for the investigation.
