Oral health: care should vary depending on age

By taking preventive measures and paying special attention to basic oral care, you can maintain healthy teeth and mouth throughout your life.

The more involved parents, caregivers, health and educational professionals, and anyone else who can monitor and intervene in oral health, the better and longer lasting the results.

The needs and care we need to take to maintain oral health vary slightly between different age groups, as well as at different stages of life.

During pregnancy, due to the hormonal changes typical for this period, special attention to oral hygiene is necessary.

Adequate oral care should begin from birth. To clean the mucous membranes, use gauze or fingertips. Teeth brushing with fluoridated toothpaste (1000-1500 ppm), the main measure for promoting oral health and preventing oral diseases, should be done in an appropriate dose, starting from the eruption of the first primary tooth, at least twice a day. one of them at night, before bed.

In older people and people with systemic pathologies such as diabetes, renal failure, etc., xerostomia associated with polypharmacy also leads to worsening oral problems, so special attention must be paid to oral hygiene and denture hygiene.

According to the National Oral Health Promotion Programme, approximately 1,000 Portuguese are diagnosed with oral cancer each year and almost 50% of users die from the disease within five years. It accounts for 4% of cancer deaths in men and is the fifth leading cause of cancer death.

An objective examination of the oral cavity should be performed regularly, which is especially important for users aged 40 years and older, especially if they are men, smokers and alcoholics.

An assessment of the global oral health situation by the World Health Organization (WHO) highlights that, despite significant improvements observed in many countries, problems remain. The current picture of dental caries reflects different risk profiles in different countries (living conditions, lifestyle and environmental factors) and, in particular, the impact of oral health promotion programmes. Dental caries remains the most serious oral health problem, even in industrialized countries, affecting 69 to 90% of school-aged children and the vast majority of adults.

Increasing literacy and adopting health-promoting behaviors are essential to maintaining oral health. Therefore, it is important to take care of your oral health every day by practicing simple habits such as brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing, and visiting your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. It is also important to eat a healthy diet and limit your intake of sugar and acidic foods, which can damage your teeth.
