On Tuesday, more than 150 national and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) asked the Brazilian government to mobilize Congress to approve the Escazu Agreement, which protects human rights defenders on environmental issues.
In a statement, one of the signatories, Human Rights Watch (HRW), said the groups sent a letter to Brazil’s Institutional Relations Minister Alexandre Padilla so the government could influence Congress to continue reviewing the agreement.
The Escazú Agreement, signed in 2018 by 24 Latin American countries, protects the rights of access to information and justice, public participation in environmental decision-making processes, and contains specific provisions to protect human rights defenders in environmental matters.
