The World Health Organization (WHO) this Wednesday launched a new network of laboratories to coordinate global capabilities to detect, monitor and evaluate potentially new or circulating coronaviruses with public health impact.
The new network, called CoViNet, expands the WHO network of reference laboratories for SARS-CoV-2 (the coronavirus behind the Covid-19 pandemic), which was established in January 2020.
According to a WHO statement, CoViNet currently includes 36 laboratories from 21 countries in the organization’s six regions – Europe, the Americas, Africa, Southeast Asia, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Western Pacific.
Laboratory representatives met today and Tuesday in Geneva, Switzerland, to finalize an action plan for 2024-2025 that will enable WHO member states to be better prepared to early detect, assess risk and respond to health challenges related to coronaviruses.
The data generated by CoViNet will guide the work of WHO technical teams on viral evolution and vaccine composition.
