Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi delivered a eulogy this Thursday in honor of Manuel Thome, former secretary general of the ruling Frelimo party, who died on Monday from illness at the age of 72.
“We will continue to fight for social justice, which has always been your concern,” Nyusi said in a message he posted on his Facebook page.
The Mozambican head of state, who is also president of the Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo), pointed to “verticality, consistency, frankness, a simple approach and unwavering optimism” as Manuel Thome’s personality traits.
“Today and always we honor the musician-composer, artist, cultural and sports figure, teacher, outstanding journalist and politician,” he said, emphasizing the multi-faceted profile of the former general secretary of the party in power.
The funeral of Manuel Tome took place this Thursday in the Pasos Hall of the Municipality of Maputo in front of representatives of various sectors of Mozambican society, including the President of the Republic.
In addition to his position as Secretary General of Frelimo, Thome was the head of the parliamentary bench of the ruling party in the Assembly of the Republic, Secretary General of the National Organization of Journalists (SNJ), Director General of Radio Mozambique and a member of the board of directors of the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Power Plant (HCB).
