Korean Air said on Tuesday it had acquired 33 A350s, the South Korean flagship’s first order for the European Airbus group’s most innovative model made primarily from composite materials.
On Tuesday, Airbus said in a statement that the “firm order” placed by Korean Air consists of 27 A350-1000 aircraft, the highest-capacity version, with the remaining six aircraft being the A350-900 model.
The South Korean carrier’s director of operations and safety, Jason Yoo, said he was confident the addition of the A350 to its fleet would “improve its operational efficiency and provide a better service to its customers.”
The A350 is powered by modern Rolls-Royce jet engines and is made from 70% advanced materials, namely composites, titanium and aluminum, to make it lighter. This allows fuel consumption to be reduced by approximately 25% compared to previous generation aircraft for intercontinental flights. Its range reaches 9,700 nautical miles, that is, 18,000 kilometers.
The A350-900 version is capable of carrying 330 passengers in a standard three-class configuration. In the A350-1000 version, the number of seats increases to 400.
By the end of February, Airbus had sold 1,240 units to 59 customers worldwide.
