A prison guard was attacked by an inmate during his lunch break at Tires Prison on Tuesday, causing no serious injuries. This is the 13th such incident since the beginning of the year, according to one of the class unions.
The leader of the National Union of Prison Guards (SNCGP), Francisco Morais, told Lusa that on Tuesday during lunch, about 30 prisoners staged a protest in the canteen over the quality of food, which ended in an attack on one of them. Security guards called to intervene were “pulled by the hair and thrown to the ground.”
The union leader stressed that there had been complaints, both from guards and prisoners, about the lack of security in the Cascais women’s prison, as well as about the quality of food.
Francisco Morais stressed the importance of the debate over conditions in Portuguese prisons, especially after a new government, formed through legislative elections on March 10, took office on Tuesday and appointed a new justice minister.
When contacted, the Directorate General of Reintegration and Prison Services (DGRSP) was sent information for the future as it had not yet received the incident report.
However, he explained that in situations such as aggression against a prison guard, the prisoners involved will be subject to restraint, investigation and disciplinary action, and will be reported to the prosecutor’s office.
