This Tuesday, a herd of goats entered a cemetery in the rural area of Palais, in Barreira, Setubal district. The animals were left unattended and damaged several graves. The Municipal Council of Barreiro in the district of Setúbal, in collaboration with the PND, has begun the process of identifying the owner of a herd of goats.
Some residents of the area told the Jornal de Notícias that the animals “usually” roam “without any supervision.”
After this incident, the municipality clarified that no graves were damaged as a result of this incident, but that the process of identifying the owner of the herd is currently underway in cooperation with the Republican National Guard.
“Later, when we receive the same information, we will notify families and inform them of the situation,” Barreiro City Council says.
In information sent to the Lusa agency, the municipality adds that it will implement the measures provided for by the municipal ordinance on the grazing of animals, their permanent presence and transit in public places, approved in 2021.
According to the decree, it is prohibited to herd animals in public and private municipal premises and other private premises irregularly and without the owner’s permission, and a fine of 100 to 2,500 euros is imposed.
