Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, who held a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, this Wednesday guaranteed political, economic, humanitarian and military support from Portugal “as long as necessary.”
“Ukraine can count on our political, economic, humanitarian and military support as long as necessary. We will work together to build peace in Europe and throughout the world,” you can read in the post of the new Prime Minister of Portugal on the social network X. .
Luis Montenegro responded to another publication on the X head of the Ukrainian state, in which a telephone conversation with a Social Democrat was published.
In this publication, Zelensky repeated his congratulations to Luis Montenegro on his inauguration as prime minister on Tuesday, wishing him “fruitful work for the prosperity of Portugal.”
Regarding Portugal’s support for Ukraine as it fights the Russian invasion, Zelensky explained that the two leaders discussed “the implementation of previous defense agreements” between the countries.
“We have instructed the teams to begin work on preparing a bilateral security agreement within the framework of the G7 Declaration. We are also coordinating future joint contacts,” the President of Ukraine added.
On Tuesday, the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, swore in Prime Minister Luis Montenegro and the ministers of the XXIV Constitutional Government at a ceremony at the National Palace of Ajuda in Lisbon.
In its inauguration speech, Montenegro referred to the ongoing war following the Russian invasion in February 2022, saying Portugal would continue to “provide full support to Ukraine within the framework of the European Union and NATO.”
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, arguing it was to protect pro-Russian separatist minorities in the east and to “denazify” the neighboring country, independent since 1991 following the collapse of the former Soviet Union, and which was moved away from Moscow’s space of influence and closer to Europe and the West .
The war in Ukraine has already resulted in tens of thousands of deaths on both sides, but recent months have seen little progress in the theater of operations, with the two warring sides remaining steadfast in their territorial positions and not open to negotiating concessions.
Recent months have been marked by large-scale Russian airstrikes on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, while Kyiv’s forces have struck targets in Russian territory near the border and on the Crimean peninsula, illegally annexed in 2014.
Already in the third year of the war, the Ukrainian Armed Forces faced a shortage of weapons and ammunition, despite repeated promises of help from the Western allies.
