Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi this Thursday called the country’s electoral model “very expensive”, noting that the money spent on ballots “was enough to equip” the Armed Forces.
“The electoral cycle in Mozambique is very expensive (…), it’s a lot of money, it will be enough to arm those young people who defend their homeland,” Nyusi said, referring to the military involved in the fight against armed groups in Mozambique . Cabo Delgado province, north of the country.
The head of state of Mozambique spoke at the opening of a meeting of the Association of Fighters for the National Liberation Struggle (ACLLIN), the political arm of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), the party in power, whose president is Filipe Nyusi.
The country, he continued, needs to rethink its election model, calling for reflection on the relevance of voter registration for each election event.
“We conducted a census last year [para as eleições autárquicas]“We’re doing it again this year,” Mozambique’s head of state said at the October 9 general election.
“Perhaps some costs, some costs [com os escrutínios] can serve to protect the nation and develop the country,” he emphasized.
Although the cost of conducting electoral processes is high, Filipe Nyusi said the country must preserve its electoral votes.
“We will continue cyclically, we have no other choice,” he said.
The ACLLIN meeting precedes the Frelimo Central Committee meeting, which is scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
The October 9 general elections in Mozambique will cost 20 billion meticais (€288 million), according to the National Electoral Commission (CNE).
Mozambique will hold its seventh presidential and legislative elections on October 9: the second for provincial governors and the fourth for provincial assemblies.
The incumbent President of the Republic and Frelimo is constitutionally unable to run for office again as he is currently serving his second term as head of state after being elected in 2015 and 2019.
