A 31-year-old woman in England believes routine eye exams are essential to catch and treat benign brain tumors early, a report said this Friday. Mirror.
In 2021, Katie Everett went in for a vision evaluation and the ophthalmologist found an abnormality in both eyes.
According to her, the tumor seriously affected her vision and stopped her menstrual cycle.
The woman underwent an MRI and was diagnosed with meningioma, a primary brain tumor.
Part of the tumor was removed in two surgeries that year, and Katie began radiation therapy in late 2022 to stop the tumor from growing.
The tumor was not completely removed, which requires the patient to monitor her health more closely.
“I feel like the eye test saved my life and my vision. If the tumor had persisted longer, I could have lost my vision completely due to pressure on the optic nerve,” the woman said.
Katie decided to go public with the case and call for routine and preventive screenings.
