Brazilian writer and poet Rosana Murray, 73, was brutally attacked at dawn this Friday by three pit bull dogs on her street in Saquarema, city of Rio de Janeiro, losing one arm and an ear to the animal violence. The information was provided late Friday by the Alberto Torres State Hospital in the city of Sao Gonçalo, where she was taken by helicopter due to the severity of her injuries.
The medical commission, consisting of surgeons from different fields, managed to repair Rozana’s left arm, although it was torn by dogs, and the writer’s lips. But it was not possible to save one ear and the little that was left of the right hand, which, according to neighbors, the dogs devoured during the attack.
Roseanne Murray’s health condition remained very serious Friday evening, according to the health unit. In addition to her hands and head, Rosana received deep wounds to almost her entire body, and if it were not for the courage of her neighbors, who scared away the dogs, the writer would probably have been devoured.
The writer, who has published more than 100 books and received several awards, was attacked at about six o’clock local time, ten o’clock in the morning in Lisbon, as she left her home on Rua Ministro Salgado Filho. , in the Gravata area, in this famous city, for the beaches and tranquility, for a regular morning walk. The dogs, which are feared in the area because they have already attacked other residents, but without such ferocity, belong to a man who lives in a seized house on the same street and usually sets them free.
Neighbors were awakened by Rosana’s piercing screams and, when they responded to her calls for help, they saw the writer being dragged down the street by dogs and attacked with bites that tore off pieces of her body. The agents took the dog’s owner to give an explanation to the Saquarema police station, and the animals were sent to a temporary shelter until the court decides their fate.
Upon arrival at the scene of the attack, local firefighters determined that Rosana’s condition was too serious to be transported by ambulance to one of the city’s hospitals and requested assistance by helicopter. The plane took Rosana Murray to the largest public hospital in Sao Gonçalo, with a much larger technical and human staff, where she underwent hours-long surgery to stabilize her vital signs and repair the parts of her body most damaged by the ferocity of the dogs. and her condition continues to be a matter of concern.
