This Saturday, the streets of central Porto will be the scene of two demonstrations: one against immigration, organized by the far right, and the other anti-fascist, organized by the Habitação Hoje association, starting an hour and a half apart.
The demonstration “Against Fascism: More and Better Housing”, organized by the Habitação Hoje association, was the first demonstration to cover the streets of the city.
The demonstration will start at 15:30, the meeting point will be at Praça dos Poveiros, and at the moment it is unknown what the route of the march will be.
500 meters from Praça dos Poveiros, and an hour and a half later in Praça D. João I, the demonstration “Less immigration, more housing”, organized by the group 1143, begins.
Originally scheduled for 6:00 p.m., the meeting was rescheduled to 5:00 p.m. “following telephone contacts with PSP and by mutual agreement,” the group said in a post on social network X (formerly Twitter).
The route of the demonstration has also been changed: instead of ending at Plaza D. João I, it will go along Rua Sa da Bandeira, up Avenida dos Aliados and end next to Porto City Hall.
The two demonstrations have received a positive opinion from the Metropolitan Command of the PSP Porto, which will accompany both routes.
For “security reasons”, Metro do Porto has decided to close Aliados station from 14:30 to 19:00.
On social media, both the 1143 group and the Habitação Hoje association called on the population to take part in their respective demonstrations.
There is a brutal rise in housing prices on social media.”
“April fascists want to ban patriots from demonstrating in Porto,” another publication from the group says.
On Facebook, the Habitação Hoje association called for the unity of “the working class, Portuguese and immigrants, against fascism, hatred and disinformation.”
In an attempt to prevent a demonstration called by the extreme right from taking place, several organizations participating in the “demonstration against fascism” sent an open letter addressed to the President of the Republic, the mayor of Porto, the commander of the PSP Porto and other justice officials.
The letter seen by Luza, similar to one published in January after a demonstration “against the Islamization of Europe” in Martim Moniz in Lisbon, calls for stopping “the withdrawal from this demonstration, which constitutes incitement to hatred and violence, and not simple exercise of freedom of expression.”
