Guinean President Oumaro Sissoko Embalo is making a state visit to Ghana this Monday to discuss with his Ghanaian counterpart Nana Akufo-Addo the possibility of cooperation in the areas of fisheries, agriculture, education, defense and security.
Sissoko Embalo and Akufo-Addo are discussing how Guinea-Bissau and Ghana can cooperate in these areas during the one-day visit, according to a Guinean presidency source, adding that a “large mixed commission” between the two countries is due to meet. “very soon”.
Upon arrival in Accra, Embalo and Addo met behind closed doors, with the Guinean head of state leaving the meeting declaring that both countries shared the same values and goals of peace, political stability, economic growth, social development and prosperity.
“Ghana holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Guinea-Bissau as their country is a beacon of African emancipation and has paved the way for the liberation and independence of the people of Africa,” said the Guinean President.
Speaking in the presence of Nana Akufo-Addo, Umaro Sissoko Embalo said that while Sahel countries, Guinea-Bissau and Ghana face challenges such as “terrorism, drug trafficking and the promotion of democracy and good governance.”
“I am here to reaffirm our conviction that together, working hand in hand, in the spirit of brotherhood, complementarity and solidarity, we can achieve many important goals,” the Guinean leader emphasized.
Regarding the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union, Oumaro Sissoko Embalo said both agree on the need to move towards reforms in both organizations.
“Guinea-Bissau supports Ghana’s proposals for the establishment of sound financial institutions in Africa, such as the African Central Bank, the African Investment Bank, the African Monetary Fund and the Pan African Insurance Agency,” he said.
These reforms, he said, could bring the African continent, among other things, food security, increased trade, the creation of a free trade zone, increased value of natural resources, and the creation of jobs for youth.
Umaro Sissoko Embalo and Nana Akufo-Addo committed that Guinea-Bissau and Ghana “can and must” play an important role in promoting mutual understanding, good neighborliness, peaceful conflict resolution and cooperation in West Africa and the rest of the continent.
