The African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) this Monday condemned the “systematic interference” of some leaders of the armed forces in political life and denounced their position of “defending the President of the Republic”.
In a press release, PAIGC, which led the coalition that won the June 2023 elections and whose government was dismissed by the President of the Republic, Oumaro Sissoko Embalo, deplored the situations that have occurred over the past ten years, which it considers interference and biased speeches that constitute guarantors of decisions made by the head of state, “even in a head-on collision” with the Constitution of the Republic and other laws.
“As if this anti-republican stance of recent years were not enough, the instrumentalization of the Armed Forces [tem-se] aggravated by heightened accusations of attempted coups, the inability to provide evidence, as this, in fact, happened with the cases from February 1, 2022 and December 1, 2023 to this day, the contours of which remain to be clarified and evidence to be presented,” he says. PAIGC statement.
The party recalls that 60 years ago, on its initiative was the creation of the People’s Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARP), but from which it had to separate due to the country’s openness to a multi-party system.
It is unacceptable to PAIGC that some leaders of the armed forces have recently taken a deliberate position defending solely the perceived legitimacy of Oumaro Sissoko Embalo, “blatantly ignoring the people’s elected representatives” in parliament and government.
The party recalls that these bodies were also the result of the “popular verdict” of the Guineans.
“The PAIGC demands that the armed forces be distanced from the presidency of the republic,” calls on them to respect their role as guardians of the institutions of sovereignty and holds them responsible for the physical integrity of the party leaders.
The party, led by Domingos Simões Pereira, former prime minister and current president of parliament, which was dissolved last December by Humaro Sissoko Embalo, justifies its concerns with recent statements by the deputy chief of staff of the Armed Forces.
General Mamadou “Nkrumah” Toure visited some military units in the country last week to condemn alleged information indicating that “another coup attempt” was underway.
On this occasion, General Toure named some military personnel, as well as the former Prime Minister and Vice-President of PAIGC, Geraldo Martins, as the alleged organizers of the plot.
One of the named military officers, General Baute Yamntha Na Man, Deputy Chief of the Army General Staff, categorically denied any involvement in any coup attempt and called on the Armed Forces General Staff to demand evidence from those making accusations.
General Na Man has promised to initiate criminal proceedings against the author of the complaint, which mentions his name.
