The Judicial Police are investigating the death of an 88-year-old woman who was attacked by her own dogs on Monday in the village of Conqueiros, parish of São Martinho das Amoreiras, in the municipality of Odemira. Inspectors arrived at the scene but found no signs of interference or crime.
The victim was alone when, for reasons that the investigation is now trying to determine, he was attacked by his own animals, three Alentejo mongrels, which the victim himself raised. The animals, two females and a dog, were sent to the municipal kennel of Odemira, where they will await a decision regarding their future, which should include slaughter.
The alarm was raised around 4pm on Monday by a daughter who found her mother lying on the floor with several injuries caused by animals.
When emergency services arrived on the scene, the elderly woman was already in cardiopulmonary arrest. Firefighters and the INEM medical team also carried out resuscitation efforts, but were unsuccessful. Health authorities pronounced him dead at the scene and the body was taken to the Beja Hospital mortuary.
The rescue operations involved the resources and operational personnel of the Odemir and Odemir SIV Fire Department.
The PNP and judicial police were at the scene and are currently investigating the incident.
The Alentejo Mongrel (also called the Portuguese Mastiff or Alentejo Mastiff) is one of the largest Portuguese breeds, with males reaching up to 50 kg. Large in size, with a large head and jaws, it has been used by shepherds for centuries to protect their flocks from predators during transhumance. As a guard dog, it can be territorial and aggressive – normal behavior towards strangers, but which in this case is surprising.
ANDQUARANTINE IN THE NURSERY
The law requires that a dog that attacks a person be turned over to a municipal veterinarian and quarantined in a kennel. During this period, the veterinarian will assess the danger of the animal, and the animal can be slaughtered. At the same time, criminal proceedings are ongoing, conducted by the prosecutor’s office.
