The government of the United States of America (USA) announced this Thursday the creation of a fund to finance 80 projects aimed at strengthening the country’s deteriorating infrastructure against the harmful effects of climate change.
The administration led by President Joe Biden has argued that the $830 million (about €775 million) financial effort is intended to improve bridges, roads, ports, railroads, transit and other infrastructure in the 37-state capital of Washington. and the territory of the Virgin Islands.
Infrastructures affected by the increasing frequency of extreme weather events caused by global warming will receive the most support.
Funds for this program come from the bipartisan infrastructure bill that was approved in 2021, but the government will also use other forms of funding that have been approved in recent months by various states for similar projects.
This is the latest in many federal efforts to address the negative impacts of climate change in the United States.
Biden has already committed more than $50 billion (about €45 billion) to climate-related projects through the Infrastructure Recovery Act and the Inflation Relief Act.
To justify these budget efforts, the Democratic president cited events such as wildfires in California that affected the state’s railroads and floods in New York that paralyzed the city’s subway system.
