The European Commission is consulting with member states on a proposal to expand state aid for primary agriculture due to persistent trade disruptions.
In his statement, the community leader noted that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has created ongoing economic uncertainty, namely breaks in supply and distribution chains and exceptionally large and unexpected price increases, especially for gas and electricity.
The consequences of the conflict in Ukraine have also extended to agriculture, so the European Commission wants to know the views of Member States on enhancing countries’ ability to continue supporting this sector.
Member states have until June 30 this year to do so, but Ursula von der Leyen’s boss said some countries believe problems in the sector caused by the Russian incursion remain.
The Commission therefore sent a proposal to extend the Crisis and Transition Framework to assess 27 countries with regard to the agricultural sector.
