At least four people have died as a coal mine flooded in northern China’s Shanxi province, the official Xinhua news agency said on Thursday.
The incident took place in the early hours of January 27, although the death toll was not confirmed until Wednesday, Xinhua reported.
Local authorities have suspended coal mining by the Jushan company, which operated the mine where the accident occurred, to address any safety issues at their projects.
Coal mines, from which China produces about 60 percent of its energy, continue to register a high rate of accidents in the country, although the number of fatal accidents has dropped significantly in recent years.
