World Press Photo of the Year shows a Palestinian woman hugging her niece killed by an Israeli rocket.

The World Press Photo Photo of the Year award has been awarded to an image of a Palestinian woman hugging the body of her niece, who was killed along with her mother and sister by an Israeli rocket, the organization announced Thursday.

In the photo taken by photographer Mohammed Salem of Reuters International at the Nasser Hospital morgue, 36-year-old Inas Abu Maamar hugs the body of her five-year-old niece Sali, already wrapped in a white sheet after she was killed by an Israeli missile that hit his home in Khan Yunis in Gaza Strip.

“The jury was deeply moved by how this image evokes emotional reflection in every viewer. Created with care and respect, it offers a metaphorical and literal look at unimaginable loss,” read a statement about the image released this Thursday. taken a few days after the photographer himself became a father.

The winner in the Story of the Year category was South African Leigh-Anne Allwage for her work in Madagascar on how “lack of public awareness of dementia means that people who exhibit symptoms of memory loss are often stigmatized.”

Venezuelan photographer Alejandro Segarra won the award for best long-term project for his work about migrants trying to enter Mexico through its southern border.

In the Open Format category, the winner was Ukrainian Yulia Kochetova with a website that “combines photojournalism with a personal, diary-style documentary that shows the world how to live with war as an everyday reality.”

The four winners announced today were selected from 24 regional winners announced earlier this month.

The winning photographs will be exhibited in Amsterdam from Friday to July and will also travel through Portugal from July 29 to August 18 in Portimao.
