Mozambique’s GRR has added 16 people to its national terrorist list

The Office of the Attorney General of the Republic of Mozambique (PGR) has placed 16 people on the national terrorist list, including 14 Mozambicans and two Tanzanians, according to the Gazette of the Republic, which Lusa saw this Friday.

The 16 citizens included in the National Terrorist List range in age from 23 to 48 years. According to Boletim da República, all of them have been charged and some are detained awaiting trial.

The addresses of the 14 Mozambicans included in the list live in districts of the province of Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique, which has been subject to armed attacks since October 2017.

Some of the defendants are accused of participating in terrorist attacks, others of financing and recruiting members of armed groups operating in Cabo Delgado.

The province has faced an armed insurgency for six years, with the extremist group Islamic State claiming responsibility for some attacks.

The insurgency, which has intensified since December 2023 with several attacks on the population and military forces, has led to a military response since July 2021, supported first by Rwanda with more than 2 thousand soldiers, and by SADC liberating areas and gas projects.
