The Political Commission of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) convened this Monday an extraordinary meeting of the Central Committee for May 3, at which it is expected to select a candidate to succeed Filipe Nyusi as President of the Republic.
“The Political Committee called for the first extraordinary session of the Frelimo Central Committee to be held on May 3 at the Central School of the Party in the city of Matola, Maputo province,” said a statement from the body, which met this Monday in Maputo under the leadership of Frelimo President and Head of State Filipe Nyusi.
The 24th weekly meeting of the political commission was aimed at “analyzing the current political, economic and socio-cultural situation in the country,” and the statement did not yet include an agenda for the extraordinary meeting of the Central Committee on May 3.
However, Frelimo President Filipe Nyusi announced on April 6 that the party’s political commission would submit to the Central Committee a list of candidates to succeed him as President of the Republic in the coming days.
“The Political Commission will submit to the Central Committee proposals regarding Frelimo’s candidacy for the presidency of the Republic as soon as possible, taking into account the electoral calendar,” said Filipe Nyusi, referring to the charter, in the closing speech of the two days. the third session of the regular meeting of the Central Committee of Frelimo, the party that has led the country since independence.
Mozambique will hold its seventh presidential and legislative elections on October 9: the second for provincial governors and the fourth for provincial assemblies.
The current President of the Republic and Frelimo is constitutionally unable to run again for the position of head of state, as he is currently in his second term after being elected in 2015 and re-elected in 2019.
The deadline for submitting lists of candidates for the President of the Republic for the October elections to the Constitutional Council is June 10.
“Frelimo is a mature party with a sixty-year history that knows how to carry out processes of transformation and adaptation to the dynamics of each moment of its history, recognizing that political processes are not static and should not be treated in the same way. Like the previous ones, we hope, since it has been decided, that this process will be completed within a few days,” he said in his speech at the final meeting of the regular session of the Central Committee, which began after 21:00 local time (20:00) in Lisbon ) April 6, about six hours later than previously announced.
The choice of Frelimo’s candidate for the October 9 general election was not initially on the agenda of the meeting, which took place in Matola, on the outskirts of Maputo, but became the main topic of debate in the highest body between the congresses.
“During the course of our work, it was emphasized that from now on our main mission is to prepare and organize the victory of Frelimo and its presidential candidate in the elections of October 9, 2024. So it was clear that today we will organize and we will organize to win […]. Don’t be surprised when we win and win well,” Nyusi said.
