A special care center for Alzheimer’s patients in the US state of Iowa was fined $10,000 (nine thousand euros) after sending the body of a still-living woman to a funeral home in a body bag.
The 66-year-old woman, who suffered from dementia, anxiety and depression, was hospitalized on December 28 last year and pronounced dead on January 3.
The woman’s body was placed in a body bag and taken to a funeral home, where “employees who opened the bag found that the woman’s chest was moving because her lungs were gasping for air,” according to an official report, which daily mail had access.
Rescuers called to the scene confirmed that they were able to record the heartbeat and breathing of a woman who was taken to the hospital in an inanimate form.
The woman eventually returned to the special care center but died on January 5.
