Nearly 150 people have died in Mozambique due to natural disasters since October

According to the official report, which Lusa accessed this Monday, a total of 148 people have been killed, 206 injured and 241,327 people affected by natural disasters in Mozambique since October, when the rainy season began.

The province of Nampula in the north of the country recorded the highest number of deaths, with a total of 30, Mozambique’s National Institute for Disaster Management and Reduction (INGD) points out in an assessment from October 2023 to October 22. last April.

Of the 148 deaths recorded during the period, 61 were caused by lightning, 32 by drowning, 20 by wall collapses and three by animal attacks, the agency said.

At least 7,417 homes were completely or partially destroyed, and another 26,207 homes were flooded due to the weather, while 89 health facilities and 42 houses of worship were damaged.

The bad weather also destroyed 1,046 classrooms, affecting 500 schools, 114,931 students and 2,542 teachers.

Authorities also indicate that 688,790 hectares of crops and 225 power poles were damaged, as well as 652 ships destroyed.

The 2023/2024 rainy season, which is coming to an end, was marked by the passage of Severe Tropical Storm Filipo and heavy rainfall in the south of the country, causing flooding in the cities of Maputo, Matola and Xai Xai, as well as in the cities of Boane and Marracuene.

Mozambique is considered one of the countries hardest hit by global climate change, experiencing cyclical floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season, which runs from October to April.
