A former video blogger who was shot dead by Daesh has shared safety tips for anyone like him who wants to be in dangerous places. This advice came after an American YouTube blogger was kidnapped in Haiti.
Andrew Drury, a 58-year-old Briton, became interested in conflict zones more than 30 years ago. He has since infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan (a white supremacist group) and traveled to Somalia.
Although he is aware of the dangers of his work, the Briton has some advice for anyone who wants to follow in his footsteps.
While many vloggers talk to locals beforehand and research where they’re going, there are others who take a more laid-back approach and don’t try to inform themselves.
“The first thing you don’t do is write it down. They’re stupid, they tell you where they’re going to be or where they’re going,” Drury explained Mirror.
The Briton said it would be immature to share all the information about the trip.
“I don’t share images until I get home. It’s elementary. I can’t believe they are so stupid. They might as well ask to be kidnapped,” he said.
Drury listed some tips for anyone considering traveling to a conflict zone. “Do your research on sites and know the risks; Complete special training; accept what is happening to you – in case you are detained; look for a local guide; ask yourself what you are doing and if you are doing it for the sake of watching, not I am not doing it.
The warnings came after Addison Pierre Maalouf, an American YouTuber, was allegedly kidnapped in Haiti, where there is an uprising between gangs and authorities.
Drury, who now works as a journalist, admits that when a person risks his life, he gets an adrenaline rush. However, he admits that his view of tourism in conflict zones changed during the filming of the documentary.
