Regina Lemos Goncalves, a Brazilian socialite worth around €470 million, said she had been held captive and controlled by her former driver, José Marcos Ribeiro, for the past ten years.
Widowed for 30 years and without children, Regina inherited a million-dollar fortune after her husband’s death. Nestor Gonsalves was a farmer and businessman. Regina lives in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, and owns hundreds of apartments, land and mansions.
The socialite was known for throwing extravagant parties in Copacabana, but has been out of sight in the last decade. According to Regina, she told the site FantasticThe former driver had control of his financial life for several years and there is evidence that he took advantage of his assets.
Her absence worried Regina’s closest neighbors and friends, who eventually reported her missing. At the time when they contacted the socialite, the calls were always answered by José Marcos Ribeiro, a former driver. The man always claimed that the woman was sick and could not help her.
José Marcos Ribeiro was hired in 2010. The man claims that he had a romantic relationship with the socialite, but the Brazilian woman denies this fact. However, there is a union record in 2021, when he was 50 years old and she was 85.
Family and friends were suspicious of the news because of the difference between them. “Why would Regina get involved with a man like him? She always saw him as a collaborator,” the friend said. Fantastic.
On January 2 of this year, Regina managed to leave the house alone and go to her brother’s house, also in Copacabana. “I decided to run away. I decided to put an end to it. I went to look for my brother’s house. When I arrived, they were scared. I lost more than 30 kilograms,” he said.
The family was frightened by Regina’s health and filed a restraining order against Jose Marcos Ribeiro. The next day the court accepted the measure of protection. Jose Marcos must stay at least 250 meters away from the socialite.
