Zubicilla is the daughter of musician and composer Nelas Spencer, and, according to the singer’s mother, her father has already serenaded her.
“I think I started playing music when I was still in the womb. My father is a composer and musician, Nelas Spencer. My mother told me, they both told me, that he serenaded me while I was still in the womb. I was born, and my mother wanted me to do gymnastics. I went there to try, and at the age of five I decided that no, I want to learn to play the violin,” says the singer, who entered the Pentagram music school in Pentagram, the city of Praia, but he did not have a violin teacher , so he started with flute and piano, later, in his youth, he devoted himself more to the guitar, where he feels comfortable.
Zubicilla has always loved to sing. In 1998, she took part in the “Gala dos Pequenos Cantores” in Figueira da Foz, which ultimately became a turning point in her determination: “That’s when I realized that I loved singing. Little by little I started singing in the bathroom, at home, when my parents weren’t around because I always felt so awkward, and I started to realize that maybe I had a future. I went to study in Brazil and recorded a song. One day they heard me sing and said I had a great voice and I didn’t want to start a group. I formed a band, played in Brazil and haven’t stopped singing since then. ”
Zubicilla Spencer’s music is heavily influenced by traditional Cape Verdean music such as batuk and funana, especially when performed acoustically, the singer says.
“Most of my songs are written in Creole, which is my nationality, but I love jazz, I love blues, I love soul music. I sang a lot of reggae, listened to rock, I was a first-class rocker. When music plays, I allow myself to be lulled by the sound I feel. I don’t think I’m going to make funana or batuk or that it has to have a Cape Verdean influence, no, I’ll express whatever comes my way. That’s the way it is,” guarantees Zubicilla.
One of his songs is “Amor Novo,” which talks about a new passion. “It doesn’t have to be a person, it certainly can be a person, but it’s whatever we fall in love with that gives us the motivation to keep going. If I’m having a hard time, I want to do something that motivates me, I want to learn to play the piano or I want to become a cyclist. A new hobby in which I wake up and say: today I will race a bicycle,” the singer concludes.
