A flammable bottle hit a synagogue in Warsaw this Wednesday, leading to the conviction of Polish political leaders, according to police and a Reuters report. Police say the suspect is a 16-year-old Polish teenager who has already been arrested.
“In the evening, we were informed of an incident in which a bottle containing a flammable liquid was thrown into the synagogue,” a police spokesman said.
According to the same source, Jewish community authorities said surveillance camera footage showed three Molotov cocktails being thrown in a matter of seconds. Police say they are investigating the incident, although there is no motive for the attack yet.
Poland’s Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich said no one was injured in the incident.
“There is no context here, there is no other possibility – it is anti-Semitism,” says Michael Schudrich when asked about a possible motive.
The attack also left traces of soot around a window on the first floor of the synagogue.
Israel’s ambassador to Poland, Jacob Livne, said the synagogue was the only one in Warsaw to survive World War II and the Holocaust, noting that “such outrageous anti-Semitic attacks cannot be tolerated today.”
Polish President Andrzej Duda also called the attack “shameful.” “There is no place for anti-Semitism in Poland! There is no place for hatred in Poland!” he added.
