This Friday, the political commission Frelimu proposed the names of Roque Silva, Damian José and Daniel Chapo as preliminary candidates to succeed Filipe Nyusi as President of the Republic of Mozambique in the general elections of October 9.
According to internal information to which Lusa had access, the list, which includes the current Secretary General Roque Silva, was approved at a meeting of the political commission of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) and immediately thereafter transferred to an extraordinary meeting of the party’s Central Committee, which is already taking place in Matola , on the outskirts of Maputo.
The Central Committee, the party’s highest body between congresses, must approve Frelimo’s candidate for the October presidential election, which can also decide to include other candidates.
In addition to Roque Silva, the list of the political committee, which began meeting on Thursday to approve the document and continued throughout the morning and most of the day today, also includes Damian José, a member of the political committee, and Daniel Chapo, the governor of Inhambane Province.
According to Frelimo’s statutes, the Political Commission is responsible for presenting to members of the Central Committee a list of three names of provisional candidates to succeed Filipe Nyusi, President of the Republic, and Frelimo, who is constitutionally unable to run for office due to reaching the two-term limit.

The deadline for submitting lists of candidates for the President of the Republic for the October elections to the Constitutional Council is June 10.
Mozambique will hold its seventh presidential and legislative elections on October 9: the second for provincial governors and the fourth for provincial assemblies.
