Several German political leaders, including the chancellor, condemned the brutal attack this morning on MEP Matthias Ecke while he was alone hanging up posters at the start of campaigning for the European elections scheduled for June 9.
“Actions like this threaten democracy,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a message in which he wished Matthias Ecke, a member of the European Parliament from his ruling party, “to come face to face with what has become a horror in his life.”
Friday night’s attack in Dresden, eastern Germany, on the MEP, who is also leading the SPD ticket in the Saxony region in the European elections, is not the first attack on German politicians in recent months, making it a resounding warning of the possibility of a politically motivated crime.
