PSP and GNR will be on the road for the next eight days, warning drivers about the risks of using a mobile phone while driving, as part of a screening and awareness-raising operation, it was announced this Monday.
The road safety campaign ‘Behind the wheel, your mobile phone can wait’ runs from Tuesday to 13 May.
The part is a joint initiative of the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), which is responsible for raising awareness, as well as the Public Security Police (PSP) and the National Republican Guard (GNR), which are responsible for monitoring roads, especially those with heavy traffic. in the National Inspection Plan 2024 (PNF).
Scheduled inspection activities: Tuesday, at 09:00, on additional route (IC) 2, at kilometer 33, in Lisbon; Wednesday, 15:00, Rua Coronel Armando da Silva Masanita, Portimao; Thursday, 08:00, Almodóvar service area, north/south; Friday, 10:00, Avenida Lino de Carvalho, in Évora; and May 13, at 14:00, at Estrada Nacional (EN) 18, at kilometers 171/100, in Portalegre.
“This campaign will run from May 7 to 13 and aims to warn drivers of the negative and even fatal consequences of misusing a mobile phone while driving,” the organizations responsible for the campaign said in a joint statement.
ANSR, PSP and GNR remind us that “using a mobile phone while driving increases the likelihood of being involved in a crash by four times, causing longer reaction times to unexpected situations.”
“At 50 km/h, looking at your mobile phone for three seconds is the same as driving 42 meters blindfolded, which is equivalent to a queue of 10 cars,” they claim.
Subjects emphasize that “using a cell phone while driving poses a risk to the safety of oneself and others,” emphasizing that “using electronic devices while driving causes difficulty interpreting signs and disrespect for yield rules, especially towards pedestrians.”
The campaign, which begins Tuesday, will be the fifth of 12 inspection campaigns planned for 2024.
By the end of the year, seven more campaigns will be carried out, one per month, with awareness-raising and inspection activities.
