The airport in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, has closed all operations until at least May 30 due to storms that hit the south of the country, officials said this Monday.
In a statement, the company responsible for managing the airport clarified that there are “no forecasts for the resumption of operations.”
The rains, which have ravaged southern Brazil for a week, have already left at least 84 people dead and 111 missing and have caused severe flooding in hundreds of cities, including Porto Alegre, the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, which borders Argentina and Uruguay. .
The same situation occurred at Salgado Filho airport in Porto Alegre, whose runways and facilities were completely flooded.
Porto Alegre authorities explained that for now, planes delivering humanitarian aid to the capital will be able to use the airport in the neighboring municipality of Canoas, although it will not accept commercial flights while the emergency lasts.
The rains, which began to subside this Monday after a week without respite, have affected some 840,000 people in 345 municipalities, who suffer from shortages of food, medicine and basic services such as electricity and drinking water.
Of these, 121,957 people were forced to flee their homes, according to local Civil Defense.
