A dentist has explained how a patient’s oral health can indicate when Alzheimer’s disease may begin to appear. How Mirror and the doctor says, “Some of the first signs of an Alzheimer’s patient are an untidy mouth.”
According to Dr. Smita, a clinician in the UK, plaque in the mouth, swollen, bleeding gums or tooth decay are indicators of neglect and poor dental health.
People with dementia are more likely to neglect oral care, and this is considered one of the main warning factors for early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.
“It is obvious to us dentists when a patient complains of pain when touching or blowing air on the teeth,” says Smita.
The newspaper also points out that the presence of a bacteria called Porphyromonas gingivalis is one of the strongest evidence among Alzheimer’s disease patients and periodontal disease patients.
