The Council of the European Union (EU) on Tuesday gave the green light to the first Community Directive to combat domestic violence against women, requiring member states to criminalize online stalking and the sharing of intimate images without consent.
“The Council has given the green light to the EU directive on violence against women and domestic violence. Taking decisive action against these acts of violence is essential to guarantee the fundamental values and rights of equality between women and men and non-discrimination,” the statement emphasized the institution uniting member states.
Specifically, the law passed on Tuesday makes online harassment, stalking and incitement to hatred or violence, sharing intimate images without consent, female genital mutilation and forced marriage EU crimes.
