Conservative Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova won North Macedonia’s presidential election this Wednesday, becoming the first woman to hold the post with the support of the nationalist VMRO-DPMNE party, which is expected to lead the Balkan country’s future government.
Siljanovska-Davkova, a constitutional law specialist and retired professor, won 64.84% with 81.27% of the votes counted against 29.29% for the current president, Social Democrat Stevo Pendarovski, who had already admitted defeat.
“Is there a greater change than electing a woman president?” the elected candidate told her supporters, vowing to be “side with women in this great step forward, a step towards reform.”
