Some Ukrainian prisoners will be eligible for parole if they join the country’s army. The measure is part of a new law approved by Ukraine’s parliament that aims to strengthen Kyiv’s forces in the conflict with Russia.
In accordance with CNNThe law applies to prisoners who have no more than three years left to serve their sentences, and does not apply to those involved in more serious crimes such as rape, murder and pedophilia.
The decision came after a series of offensives by Russian troops on the front line and as the country faced a shortage of soldiers and weapons.
According to CNN, the inclusion of prisoners in the troops is already used in other countries. Russia has been recruiting prisoners since the first months of the invasion of Ukraine.
