The unbridled rise of Guaiba threatens on Monday, with further heavy rains forecast, one of the most emblematic buildings in Porto Alegre, designed by the Portuguese architect Siza Vieira.
The headquarters of the Ibere Camargo Foundation, the Pritzker Prize winner’s first project in Brazil, was threatened by severe flooding as water levels in Guaiba rose above five meters.
To avoid damage caused by uncontrolled water, the management of Iberê Camargo, which brings together the artist’s works, placed the collection on a raised platform, opened in 2008.
Siza Vieira’s design, which ironically paid special attention to the environment, particularly the use of water, was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, a unique event in Latin America.
project for 20 million
Built next to Guaiba, it is the only building in Brazil constructed entirely of white concrete. The work cost 20 million euros.
Eco-friendly building
The hotel reuses rainwater in the bathrooms and also has a sewage treatment plant to treat solid and liquid waste.
