This Monday, the Constitutional Council (CC) of Mozambique received the candidacy of Miguel Mabote of the Labor Party for the presidency of the republic in the elections of October 9, the first candidacy presented to this body.
“Candidate Miguel Rafael Simbine Mabote is the first who, through his representatives, came to the Constitutional Council to present his candidacy for the presidency of the Republic,” Lucia Ribeiro, President of the Constitutional Court, told the media today after receiving the candidacy.
The application process began on February 6 and will end on June 10, recalled Lucia Ribeiro.
“Since the process will end on the 10th, we expect that by June 24 or 25 we will have the final list and then we will be able to draw up a list of candidates,” the CC chairman added.
“The prospect is that the Constitutional Council will approve our candidate and he will be able to stand in the presidential election,” Labor Party Secretary General Carlitos Mula told reporters after Miguel Mabote’s candidacy was submitted to the Constitutional Council.
Of the three parliamentary parties, the Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo), which is in power, and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), the third political force, have already announced their presidential candidates.
Frelimo supports the candidacy of Daniel Chapo, the current governor of Inhambane, and MDM Lutero Simango, the party president.
The Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the largest opposition party, has not yet presented its presidential candidate, but has a convention planned for Wednesday and Thursday at which it could likely announce its candidate.
On October 9, Mozambique will hold general elections, including presidential elections, in which the current President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, is no longer participating because he has reached the two-term limit established in the Constitution.
