At least two miners were killed, one missing and 12 injured Tuesday in a collapse at the Myslowice Wesola coal mine in southern Poland, according to those responsible for the company that owns it.
The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. local time (2:30 a.m. in Lisbon), about 870 meters underground, in an area where 15 miners were working, said Raimund Horst, deputy director of the company that operates the mine.
Horst said two miners found by rescuers and brought to the surface were pronounced dead and another was taken to hospital.
Previously, according to the head of the company, eleven miners with various injuries had already been rescued, nine of them remained in the hospital.
Six rescue teams working at the site are still searching for the missing miner.
The accident occurred in an area particularly prone to collapses and explosions of methane, which is present in the rock of many coal mines in Poland.
This is the second collapse at the Myslowice-Wesola mine this year, following the collapse on April 17 that killed a miner.
Two other miners have died in accidents at other mines in Poland this year, and 15 miners have died in work-related accidents in 2023.
