Four hundred and fifty liters of counterfeit olive oil sold through social media were seized on Monday near the city of Lisbon, the Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE) said on Tuesday.
ASAE said in a statement that the operation, carried out through the Southern Regional Unit – Operational Unit of Évora, targeted two economic operators with commercial links that operated exclusively through social networks.
ASAE also states that during the action, the sale of vegetable oil under the guise of extra virgin olive oil with a protected designation of origin (DOP) was discovered at the scene of the crime, with a fee of 30 euros being charged for each five-liter package.
As part of the operation, two criminal proceedings were initiated on the facts of illegal fraud with goods, falsification of documents and illegal use of an appellation of origin or geographical indication, and 450 liters of vegetable oil, hundreds of falsified labels, and two vehicles were seized. and various documents indicating the commission of a crime.
According to ASAE, the total value of the seizure is 40 thousand euros.
“It should be noted that four samples of the seized olein products were also collected and sent to the ASAE Food Safety Laboratory for appropriate physicochemical and sensory analyses,” the statement said.
The suspects were found guilty and subject to personal and residential conditions, and the facts were submitted to the judiciary, ASAE adds.
